Edwards Weston

Edward Weston.

Edward Weston has been called one of the most innovative and influential American photographers and one of the masters of 20th century photography.

Over the course of his forty-year career Edward Weston photographed an increasingly expansive set of subjects, including landscapes, still lifes, nudes, portraits, genre scenes and even whimsical parodies.

 It is said that he developed a quintessentially American,Californian, approach to modern photography because of his focus on the people and places of the American West.

In 1937 Edward Weston was the first photographer to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship, and over the next two years he produced nearly 1,400 negatives using his 8 × 10 view camera. 

Some of his most famous photographs were taken of the trees and rocks at Point Lobos, California, near where he lived for many years.

These are a few of his images for research for what I could have used in my final major project;

 This image is from a set of images which are supposed to be represented as a persons body. This image can show various emotions, even though when you look at it the first one what comes to mind be sorrow or disappointment I think that one could be interest or at least. I think that this portrays disappointment and sorrow because of the shape, if somebody droops over then it does not look like a positive manor like nobody wants to know you feel shut out

 I like this image because of the space what has been taken up in the image. 

I like how it has spreaded throughout the image and I like how the background is darker to the object what is being photographed.

I like the direction of the composition what is in the image. The lettuce is going downwards and also in the background there is line on the floor which I think is a nice effect. This image makes it look like a womans hair  which has been layed on a floor, the only difference is the textures of the object.

I like this image because I love the way the object tends to conjoin in the image together which makes the shadows look really nice and detailed, this image make me feel happy in a way because the piece looks like it is coming together with gives a great sense of emotion to the image also. 

It makes me feel happy slightly because it looks like two people are coming together when they meet which I really like,at the same time it also looks like a mother is embracing her child in a hug as if it was a story being told as if they had been separated.

I like the texture of the image as well, even though you cant feel it you know that it looks like its a soft object, the image has been captured well with the light what reflects off it.

Researched Presentation Methods

Bill Brandts Exhibition:

Bill Brandts exhibition boards vary in many ways, his images arent all the same size and there are variations of size on the board, he repeats his images more than once then changes the size of them.

Some images have black frames around them whilst others on another board have white frames around them. I think also that the bigger pictures which have a bigger frame are the images he wants to reach out to the viewer the most.


May Rays' Exhibition:

Man Rays work is siilar to Bill's work as it has frames which are black also,  they are all black but one thing which is similar but different at the same time is that they are different sizes but with Man Rays he has it where it is one big size which takes up allot of room and a board its self. 

I have not portrayed this into my work as I could not afford to put a border and frame around the edge of it. I thought that it was good that it went onto foam board because there is nothing to draw it attention from the image.

Man Ray

Man Ray.

Man Ray He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal. He produced major works in a variety of media but considered himself a painter above all. 

He started making objects and developed unique mechanical and photographic methods of making images. For the 1918 version of Rope Dancer, he combined a spray-gun technique with a pen drawing.

I would take this image and change it slightly. I would only use one person and it would not be a woman. As I am already using a male in my shoot I think that its better to use a male even though I would not be fully re creating Man Rays image because he uses either one women or two. 

I do like the symmetry in this image though and I like how there is a shadow in the middle of the image.

This image above I think I will try to recreate this image as well, I think that when I do body art images that its not jut going to be pictures  legs, I want it to be of the face a well or instead and other pieces of the body with it.

When I look at this image it makes me want to know about why she is covering her lip. It portrays that she may be keeping a secret which does not wish to be said. This may also mean that she's covering something up.

The image below as well I particularly like the shade in between the white and the body. I love the composition of it because it gives it shape and shows the curves of the human body, I could try and re create this image even though it looks quite hard but I will try and give it a go.

I really like how the body is in the corner of the image. It goes around the corner and up the side. Instead of a normal picture where it is based in the middle, its like it gives it a border but on the inside.

When I look at this image it makes me think that it coud be used in a horror film. You expect it to be on the wall as the shadow reminds me of the grudge where you ave the person and then you have this gaping shadow afterwards which I actually love, this makes me feel sad, a little scared and quite timid.

Solarisation

Initially, the term solarisation was used to describe the effect observed in cases of extreme overexposure of the negative in the camera. Most likely, the effect was first observed in scenery photographs including the sun (e.q. sol, sun). The sun, instead of being the whitest spot in the image, turned black or grey

One artists who had used Solarisation is Man Ray. I have researched him there wise but I think that it can till go towards research even if I dont use the solarisation technique.  
  
I like how in his images not all of them are solarised. There is some variation of what is dark grey and

These images above contrast from mine slightly but not allot, on my images I have for my final exhibition I think I have made a good job for saying I have trie to make them my own and copy them my self. 

At the start I tried to make the image on the nottom left. It was harder than done with the lighting but I got few successful shots in the end. 

I think that the compositions in both images are the same (ish) and also I have tried to copy where the light is in the images also. 

The colour are the same because i havre kept with the idea of having it in black and white. This was my original idea. 

The location from my research is different to my images. Bill Brandts images are on location and are in a room with a window, his images are also shot in studio which I have copied or mine also

, The subject I have tried to keep as clear and straight to the point, with these body shots you could get distracted about what you eat to do compared to what you are trying to re create

Final Exhibition, Presentation Board & Documentaion

 This is my final exhibition panel. Through out creating the images I have tried to copy and reintake Man Ray and Bill Brandt and Leonard Nimoy's work. I have ended up with these images up on the exhibition like so.

 

I put up my work in a view of two by two Two on the top row and two on the bottom row. It was made from Satin paper and was made from a3 size. It was then mounted onto foam board and then placed onto the display board via valcrow strips.  

 

The only thing I did not like about my work when it was up was that sombody had marked it. I should have put my pieces of work in a bag for full protection but they were only left tilted against one of the boards and because there was so many people walking around somebody had marked it so I left an un professonal finish which I wasnt happy with.

I also thin that if I was to do this again I would cut the images down to at least two and then make them a bigger size. I would say a size a2.
